Sincona sale 79, lot 1076

This specimen was lot 1076 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 3,800 CHF (about US$4,554 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Edward VI. 1547-1553. Gold 1/2 crown n. d. (1549), Tower Mint. Second period. Mintmark arrow. Crowned bust. Very rare. NGC AU53." The half crown was tariffed at 2½ shillings. The young king was governed by regents throughout his reign, whose bungling of a war with Scotland caused unrest and economic distress. The silver coinage was debased to pay for the war, a practice continued from Henry's reign. Edward's first issue of gold (1547-49) was 0.833 fine but was raised to 0.917 fine for the second, the half crown of which is shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.61 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen is 1.38 g.

Catalog reference: Spink 2444, Schneider coll. 679 var, Fr-183.
