Sincona sale 82, lot 1568

This specimen was lot 1568 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$10,037 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Edward VI. 1547-1553. Gold Crown n. d. (1549), Southwark. Second period. Mintmark "Y". Crowned bust. Selten (Rare). NGC XF Details. Gewellt (Wavy flan)." The gold crown was tariffed at five shillings. The young king was governed by regents throughout his reign, whose bungling of a war with Scotland caused unrest and economic distress. The silver coinage was debased to pay for the war, a practice continued from Henry's reign. Edward's first issue of gold (1547-49) was 0.833 fine but was raised to 0.917 fine for the second, the gold crown of which is shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.2 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen 2.75 g.

Catalog reference: Spink 2442, Schneider coll. 688, Fr-182.
