Mainz 1691-ILG 12 kreuzer
This specimen was part of lot 4757 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €220 (about US$284 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, 1679-1695. 12 Kreuzer 1691 ILG, 1692, ILG, Mainz. 4,50 g und 4,66 g. Äußerst selten. 2 Stück., Schön-sehr schön. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, one twelfth thalers of 1691 and 1692, Mainz mint. Very scarce, two pieces, fine to very fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This type was struck at Mainz in 1691-92. Twelve kreuzer was one fifth gulden or 4/30 thaler and was struck in Mainz in 1691-95. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 4,50 g.
