This specimen was lot 30777 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVI gold 2 Louis d'or 1786-N MS62 PCGS, Montpellier mint. A deep gold and sharply struck example, with radiating luster over rich original surfaces. The finest certified by PCGS, and second finest by NGC." A fairly common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Montpellier mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor French gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 217,279.

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 877, Dr/2 № 604, Fr-474; KM 592.11; Gad-363.
