Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1562

This specimen was lot 1562 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,084 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV double louis d'or à la tête nue, 1787D, Lyon. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux longs. R/ Ecus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Légères traces d'ajustage et petits défauts de flan au revers. Bel exemplaire avec brillant de frappe. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold double louis of the bare head of 1787, Lyon mint. Obverse: bare head to left with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Light traces of adjustment marks and small planchet defects on the reverse. Beautiful example with mint luster, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This is a somewhat better double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Lyon mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 108,678, a slightly better date.
