Sincona sale 43, lot 3315

This specimen was lot 3315 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Kingdom, Louis XVI. 1774-1792 2 Louis d`or au buste nu 1786 AA. Metz. Vorzüglich-FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-92 double louis of the bare bust of 1786, Metz mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

A common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Metz mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier; this specimen 15.19 g.
