Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1671

This specimen was lot 1671 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €280 (about US$366 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV louis d'or à la tête nue, 1786H, La Rochelle. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux longs. R/ Ecus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold louis of the bare head of 1786, La Rochelle mint. Obverse: bare head left with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Slightly weakly struck, Very Fine.)"

This louis d'or à la tête nue is the most common gold coin of the French ancien régime, created when the louis d'or was lowered from 8.16 g to 7.65 g. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date from La Rochelle is common.

Reported Mintage: 366,506, common for type tho not as common as 1786-A or 1786-W or 1787-A.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge; this specimen 7,61 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1707; Gad-361, Fr-475, Dr/4 № 881.
