France 1786-W louis d'or

CNG Lissner sale, lot 302

This specimen was lot 302 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $6,957.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XVI. 1774–1793. AV Louis d’or à la tête nue. Lille mint; différents: star/demi-lis. A.F.J. Gamot, engraver. L.T.F. Lepage, director. Dated 1786 W, 1st semester. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 67. Gem brilliant lustrous incredibly choice BU. Only three Louis d’or of any date or ruler have been graded MS 67. Exceedingly rare in this grade and undoubtedly the finest known. Purchased from M. Louis Teller, April 1980." The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date is priced about 75% higher than the common date (1787-A).

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 23 mm diameter, 7.64 g, 6h axis.

Recorded mintage: 1,298,715[1], a common date.
