This specimen was lot 40105 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,234. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'or, 1786-K. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, AU Details Secure Holder. Louis XVI (1774-93)." This is a common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Bordeaux mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.
