Sincona sale 46, lot 371

This specimen was lot 371 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 575 CHF (about US$690 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XVI. 1774-1792. Louis d`or au buste nu 1786 K, Bordeaux. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-92, louis d'or of the bare bust of 1786, Bordeaux mint. Extremely fine.)"

This louis d'or à la tête nue is the most common gold coin of the French ancien régime, created when the louis d'or was lowered from 8.16 g to 7.65 g. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date from Bordeaux is common.

Reported Mintage: 503,763, common for type tho not as common as 1786-A or 1786-W or 1787-A.

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge; this specimen 7.64 g.
