A scarce double louis d'or à la tête nue from the La Rochelle mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The La Rochelle issue is the lowest mintage of the year. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. The second specimen was lot 40104 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,234. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1786-H. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Louis XVI (1774-93)."

Recorded mintage: 42,518.

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Gad-363, Fr-474; KM 592.6, Dr/4 № 877, Dr/2 № 604.
