CNG Lissner sale, lot 380

This specimen was lot 380 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $453.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE, Royal (Restored). Charles X. 1824-1830. AR Quart franc. Bordeaux mint; différents: initials/grape leaf. Nicolas-Pierre Tiolier, engraver general. Alexandre Vignes, director. Dated 1830 K. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Choice original deep mottled patina with full underlying luster. Only one of this date graded for this mint. Purchased from A. H. Baldwin & Sons, July 1970." This tiny coin was struck at Bordeaux under the régime of king Charles X (1824-30). It is a scarce date of a type struck 1825-30. All quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was demonetized in 1852. The catalog^[2] notes 42 dates for the type, some very rare.

Recorded mintage: 20,628 (priced six times the common date).

Specification: 1.25 g, .900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, reeded edge. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879. This specimen is Ø15 mm, 1.23 g, 6h axis.
