Sincona sale 18, lot 2178

This specimen was lot 2178 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 425 (about US$560 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Louis dor aux lunettes 1730. Lille Selten. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, louis d'or of the spectacles of 1730, Lille mint, rare, very fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime, this date is rare but awarded little premium in Droulers[1].

Recorded mintage: 1,368[1].

Specification: 8.16 g, .917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 8.14 g.
