Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1391

This specimen was lot 1391 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €110 (about US$146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), Cu demi-sol, 1786AA, Metz. D/ T. à g. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, copper half sol of 1786, Metz mint. Obverse: head left; reverse: crowned arms of France. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This is a demi-sol a l'écu of the Metz mint, struck during the reign of Louis XVI (1774-93). Droulers[2] notes the type as common but the date as somewhat scarce. The type was issued 1777-91.

Recorded mintage: unknown[2], a somewhat better date.

Specification: copper, 6.11 g, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge; this specimen 12,25 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 893, Dr/2 no. 626, Dupl-1715; Gad-349.
