France 1785-A 1/2 sol

CNG Lissner sale, lot 295

This specimen was lot 295 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $393.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XVI. 1774–1793. CU Demi-sol. Paris mint; différents: heron/lyre. François Bernier, engraver. J. Dupeyron de la Coste II, director. Dated 1785 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64 BN. Rich brown with hints of red. Only Demi-sol of this date graded, with only one graded higher for the entire denomination for all reigns." This is a demi-sol a l'écu of the Paris mint, struck during the reign of Louis XVI (1774-93). Droulers[1] notes the type as common but the date as rather scarce. The type was issued 1777-91.

Specification: 6.11 g, copper, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 24 mm diameter, 5.99 g, 6h axis.

Recorded mintage: unknown, a better date.
