France 1783-A 1/2 sol

An demi-sol a l'écu of the Paris mint, struck during the reign of Louis XVI (1774-93). Droulers[1] notes the type as common but the date as rather scarce. The type was issued 1777-91. This specimen was lot 931 in Ponterio sale 158 (New York, January 2011), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Sol, 1783-A. Louis XVI (1774-93). NGC MS-64 BN."

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 6.11 g, copper, 24-25 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
