France 1783-A 1/20 ecu
This specimen was lot 297 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $393.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal. Louis XVI. 1774–1793. AR Vingtième d’écu aux rameaux d’olivier. Paris mint; différents: heron/lyre. François Bernier, engraver. Jean Dupeyron I, director. Dated 1783 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 62. Very nicely toned uncirculated. Only coin of this type and date ever graded. Very scarce so fine. Richard looked long and hard to find this elusive type. Purchased from Ponterio & Associates, March 2004." This type was issued from the Paris mint 1782-83 only. It is the only coin to use this bust of the king and is quite scarce, especially in nice condition, as the high relief led to weak strikes.
