Heritage sale 3010, lot 20953

This specimen was lot 20953 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Luneburg. Ernst August 2 Taler 1681-RB, choice XF. '2' stamped on obverse. Prancing horse above mining scene, reverse has crowned 'EA' monogram within circle. Lovely toning, just the most minimal of flaws, and clearly a superior example of the type." This type is catalogued as rare. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
