Sincona sale 9, lot 3851

This specimen was lot 3851 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$474 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, ab 1806 Königreich Albertiner. Friedrich August II. 1836-1854. Ausbeutevereinstaler 1866. Mmz. B. Fast FDC. (Kingdom of Saxony, Frederick August II, 1836-54, mining thaler of 1866, choice uncirculated.)"

This coin was issued for King Johann (r. 1854-73), not Friedrich August II. In addition to the regular thalers issued with the royal arms on the reverse, Saxony minted a series of mining thalers saluting the toil of the silver miners. This type was struck 1861-67 and is fairly common.

Recorded mintage: 185,000.

Specification: 18.52 g, 0.900 fine silver, .536 troy oz ASW, lettered edge, this specimen 18,53 g.

Catalog reference: Kahnt 471. Thun 349, KM 1246, Dav-896, KM 1212.
