Steve Album sale 30, lot 1133
Saxony SA30-1133r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1133 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $99.87. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXONY: Johann, 1854-1873, AR 2 neu-groschen, 1866-B, NGC graded MS66." This two neu-groschen was struck in the kingdom of Saxony 1863-66. Like most German minors before unification, it is fairly common in low grade but scarce in nice condition. The low silver content makes used specimens look ugly. Johann was king of Saxony 1854-1873. Saxon coinage, after a thousand years of minting, ceased in 1918 with the collapse of the second Reich. The denomination was retired in 1873.

Recorded mintage: 448,000.

Specification: 3.22 g, 0.300 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-1220.
