This specimen was lot 23783 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Louis XVIII Proof 5 Francs 1814A, Proof 63 NGC, First Restoration of the Monarchy, highly reflective surfaces with lightly frosted bust details, nearly cameo in appearance. The patina is aged gray and gold and most appealing. Rare in Proof and this is an exceptional example. Noted as 4 known in the SCWC." This type was struck in France 1814-15 and many of the 31 known dates are rare. This one is common but rare in proof.
