Great Britain (1643-44) double crown Fr-247
This specimen was lot 1619 in Sincona sale 82 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,944 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles I. 1625-1649. Gold Double Crown n. d. (1643-1644), Tower Mint under Parliament. Group F. Class IIa. Bust 7, after the style of Briot. Mintmark "P in brackets". NGC AU55. Finest certified by NGC." The gold of the early part of Charles's reign comprised of angels (11 shillings), unites (20 shillings), double crowns (ten shillings) and crowns (five shillings). By 1643, Charles no longer controlled the Tower Mint and coins were made there under the authority of Parliament. Charles minted his own double crowns at Oxford (Fr-260). Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.50 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen 4.43 g.
