SB821-40455r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40455 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Double Crown, ND (1640-41). London Mint; mm: Star over Triangle/Star. Charles I. NGC EF-40. Group F, class II. A fairly RARE type, this example features a star cut over a triangle on the obverse. Evenly handled on each side, it remains highly original and with an alluring deep golden-orange tone that tinges upon red-blue in areas." This gold double crown (ten shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), unite (Fr-246) and crown (Fr-248). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.5 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 4.38 g.

Catalog reference: S-2706; Fr-247; KM-148; N-2177b.
