Sincona sale 91, lot 3057

This specimen was lot 3057 in Sincona sale 91 (Zurich, May 2024), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,123 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Halbdicken 1623, Basel. Variante mit spitzem Wappen. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, half dicken of 1623, Basel mint, variety with pointed arms. Very fine.)"

The dicken, introduced in the late fifteenth century as competition for the Italian testone, varied in value and weight. By the seventeenth century it had settled down to a humble 24 kreuzer coin. This type, struck 1623 only, accompanied the dicken of the 1620's (KM 82).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 4.27 g.

Catalog reference: KM 81, D.T. 1360, HMZ 2-83i.
