Chile 1834-So IJ 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 40052 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHILE. 4 Escudos, 1834-IJ. NGC AU-55. Reported mintage of only 2,564 pieces. Scarce and interesting five year type. The first 4 Escudos type coin of Chile as an independent republic. Some light adjustment marks on the reverse (as made). Sharp strike with good details, including full sun face. Quite nice for type." Four escudos of the Republic of Chile come in three types: the crossed flags type (KM 87, struck 1824-34, shown here), the hand on book type and the standing liberty type (KM 103, struck 1839-41). All are rare and expensive.
