This specimen is one of a series struck 1836-37 in Santiago, Chile. Four escudos of the Republic of Chile come in three types: the crossed flags type (KM 87, struck 1824-34), the hand on book type (shown here) and the standing liberty type (KM 103, struck 1839-41). All are rare and expensive.

Recorded mintage: 1,389 pieces, plus 321 dated 1837.

Specification: 13.5 g, 0.875 fine gold, .379 troy oz AGW.
