Russia 1855-SP HI 25 kopeks
This specimen was lot 22435 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $258. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 25 Kopeks, 1855-CNB HI. NGC MS-64. Alexander II (1855-81). Pretty toning." This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today much coveted in nice condition. In 1886 the coin was lowered in weight to 5 g but raised in purity to .900 fine to more closely match the French standard (KM Y44).
Recorded mintage: 10,396,000 plus a few proofs.
