Sincona sale 97, lot 1373

This specimen was lot 1373 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$290 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg, Herzogtum, Friedrich I. 1675-1691. 2/3 Taler 1678, Gotha. Wertzahl in einer Volutenkartusche. Ohne Münzmeisterzeichen. Gutes sehr schön. Leicht poröser Schrötling. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick I, 1675-91, two-thirds thaler of 1678, Gotha mint, value in cartouche, without mintmaster's initials. Good Very Fine, Lightly porous flan.)"

Ernst was duke of Saxe-Gotha from 1640 and duke of Saxe-Altenburg from 1672; the two duchies were formally merged on his death in 1675. His sons, including Frederick I, established the lines of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg, Saxe-Meiningen, Saxe-Romhild, Saxe-Eisenberg, Saxe-Hildburghausen and Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. This type is known dated 1678-79 but the SCWC states it was struck with a frozen date thru the 1680's. It is common. The gulden or ⅔ thaler became very popular in the 1670's and many states struck them.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 16.66 g.

Catalog reference: KM 87, Steguweit 63, Grasser 854, Dav-855.
