This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1870-90 at the Guanajuato mint, which closed in 1900. This 25 centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller 20 centavos piece in 1898. The first specimen was lot 14225 in Heritage sale 397 (New York, January 206), where it sold for $207. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 25 Centavos 1890Go-R, superbly toned UNC, razor sharp strike and very appealing patina." The second specimen was lot 9095 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $316.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 25 Centavos, 1890-Go/HoR. NGC MS-64." The third specimen was lot 9095 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $287.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guanajuato. 25 Centavos, 1890-GoR. NGC MS-64."
