Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74845

This specimen was lot 74845 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Middlesex. Lutwyches "General Convenience". Copper 1/2 Penny Token, 1795. PCGS MS-65 Red-Brown. Obverse: Helmeted bust right of Sir Bevois; Reverse: Lion rampant in arms left. An exceedingly charming Token, delivering a handsome richness to the surfaces, and much eye appeal and allure." Wikipedia comments,

"Bevis of Hampton (Old French: Beuve(s) or Bueve or Beavis de Hanton(n)e; Anglo-Norman: Boeve de Haumtone) or Sir Bevois was a legendary English hero and the subject of Anglo-Norman, Dutch, French, English, Venetian, and other medieval metrical chivalric romances that bear his name. The tale also exists in medieval prose, with translations to Romanian, Russian, Dutch, Irish, Welsh, Old Norse and Yiddish."
