Bolivia 1782-PTS PR 8 escudos

This specimen was lot 30424 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1782 PTS-PR AU55 NGC, Potosi mint. Wholly attractive, with umber-gold tone over both sides and very minor wear affecting the higher points. Difficult to acquire finer." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1778-88 and is rare, tho somewhat more available than the four escudos.
