Bolivia 1780 8 escudos rev Heritage 3021-20082.jpg

This specimen was lot 20082 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $8,225. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1780-PR, MS62 NGC Eliasberg, a highly appealing example with well-struck features and mellow old-time patina. Very scarce type in mint state; 8 Escudos of Carlos III from Potosi are underrated in the market." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1778-88 and is rare, tho somewhat more available than the four escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .765 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12923, KM 59, Fr-1.
