Sedwick sale 11, lot 100

The specimen shown was lot 100 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Potosi, Bolivia, bust 4 escudos, Charles III, 1780PR, rare. Lustrous (lightly cleaned) XF, well centered and well struck." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1778-88 and is rare.
