Sincona sale 18, lot 2429

The first specimen was lot 40618 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. Toman, AH 1301 (1884). NGC MS-63. The Finest NGC Certified 1884 Toman. Nasir al-din Shah (1848-96). Light weakness (as usual) at obverse center. Even gray tone. Finer than the Millennia Collection piece (an NGC MS-62) that sold for $18,975 in May 2008. This is the finest graded by NGC." The second specimen was lot 2429 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 2,750 (about US$3,623 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"1 Toman 1883. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Iran, silver toman of 1883, extremely fine or better.)"

This one year type is rare. Gold tomans also exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 46.05 g, 0.900 fine silver, 50.3 mm diameter; the second specimen is 45.99 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-286; KM-917.
