Sincona sale 39, lot 4066

This specimen was lot 4066 in Sincona sale 39 (Zurich, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780 20 Kreuzer 1779. Karlsburg. Vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, twenty kreuzer of 1779, Karlsburg mint. Extremely fine.)"

Twenty kreuzer were minted 1754-97 for Francis I, Maria Theresia, Joseph II, Leopold II and Francis II from all the imperial mints in a bewildering array of varieties. This type of 1773-80 is marked by the Transylvanian arms on the eagle's breast on the reverse. It is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 6.68 g, 0.583 fine silver, .125 troy oz ASW; this specimen is 6.59 g.

Catalog reference: KM 656 (listed under Transylvania), Herinek 962.
