The first specimen was lot 3472 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,584 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 2 Dukaten 1778, HS, Karlsburg. GOLD. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Austria, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, double ducat of 1778, Karlsburg mint. Very attractive example, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 3688 in Künker sale 385 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,877 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 2 Dukaten 1778, H-S, Karlsburg. GOLD. Sehr schön-vorzüglich/vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, double ducat of 1778. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This double ducat was struck for the redoubtable Maria Theresia 1765-80 and shows the veiled bust used after the death of Francis I. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary outright.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, the first specimen 7.00 g, the second specimen 6.94 g.
