Sincona sale 66, lot 1847
Künker sale 406, lot 3862

This specimen was lot 1847 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$3,160 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HEILIGES ROMISCH REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/8 Dukat 1778 HS, Karlsburg. Münzmeister Anton Joseph Hammerschmid, Wardein Gottfried Schickmayer von Steindelbach. Selten. Fast FDC. (Austria, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, one-eighth ducat of 1778, Karlsburg mint. Rare, About uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 3862 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,936 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. 1/8 Dukat 1778, Karlsburg. GOLD. Vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, one-eighth ducat of 1778, Karlsburg mint. Extremely fine.)"

This one year type is rare. Quarter, half, single and double ducats were also issued. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary and Transylvania outright.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 0.44 g, 0.986 fine gold; both specimens 0.44 g.
