This specimen was lot 24830 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $1,955. The catalog description[1] noted, "Weimar Republic 5 Mark 1932J Goethe, UNC Details NGC (surface hairlines), the obverse has been lightly cleaned long ago while the reverse is toned and original. Rare type and a very decent example." This one year type, marking the centennial of the death of Goethe, was struck in small numbers in Berlin ("A"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J", shown here). We have included it in our category of thalers based on its size, even tho it is only 0.500 fine. The accompanying three mark is quite a bit more available.

Recorded mintage: 1,634 plus proofs.

Specification: 25 g, 0.500 fine silver, .401 troy oz ASW, 37 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-974, KM 77.
