Steve Album sale 38, lot 2803

This specimen was lot 2803 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $154.70. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GOA: Pedro IV, 1826-1828, AR rupia, 1828, small sphere variety, NGC graded VF30." This specimen is from a two year type struck for the Portuguese colonies in India. Once extensive, Portuguese dominions had dwindled by the 1800's to the enclaves of Goa, Diu and Damao. Issues up to 1870 were based on the rupee (1 rupia = 16 tanga, 1 tanga = 60 réis) and struck at local mints. After 1870, the British controlled mints of Bombay and Calcutta provided modern milled coinage.
