Western India in 1942, including Diu

This specimen was lot 45072 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Diu. 20 Bazarucos, 1828. Pedro IV. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. A crude design, struck in zinc. A sharply detailed coin with no signs of the corrosion so characteristic of zinc issues." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By 1828, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This scarce type, which is not catalogued above VF, is noted for 1827-28 only. In 1871, a new series of milled coinage, struck by the British for the Portuguese, was introduced.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: zinc.

Catalog reference: KM-58.
