Goa 1834 600 reis KM-Pn15
This specimen was lot 23290 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Silver 600 Reis Pattern, 1834. Goa Mint. Maria II. NGC Unc Details--Reverse Cleaned. A very elusive pattern, the present specimen yields impressive strike quality for the Goa Mint and a glossiness that ripples throughout the surface. The noted cleaning designation likely arises from some light lines near the date on the reverse, with some iridescence that may also imply a past lacquering. A pattern with a charming appearance, and a piece that is certain to find a home in a proud collection of Portuguese Indian coinage." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By the nineteenth century, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This pattern is one of a series that started with a copper three réis. This 600 réis (or rupia) was accompanied by KM Pn16 (struck in copper) and KM Pn17.
