Goa (1834-53) 15 reis
This specimen was lot 43302 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. 15 Reis, ND, Maria II (1834-53). PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. Good strike with nice even brown patina. Quite attractive." This type is incorrectly attributed to João VI in the SCWC. It was accompanied by copper three réis (KM 257), 4½ réis (KM 258), six réis (KM 259), 7½ réis (KM 260), ten réis (KM 261), 12 réis (KM 262), half tanga (KM 265) and tanga (KM 266). In the old predecimal system, 240 réis = one pardao in silver. This example is undated but coins struck after 1845 bear dates. In 1871, the Goa mint was closed and milled coinage from the British mints was introduced.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
