This specimen was lot 2933 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $142.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGUESE INDIA: Maria II, 1834-1853, AE 3 reis, ND, Choice VF." This type, struck 1845-49 and undated, was accompanied by copper 4½ réis (KM 258), six réis (KM 259), 7½ réis (KM 260), ten réis (KM 261), 12 réis (KM 262), 15 réis (KM 263), half tanga (KM 265) and tanga (KM 266). In the old predecimal system, 240 réis = one pardao in silver. This example is undated but coins struck after 1845 bear dates. In 1871, the Goa mint was closed and milled coinage from the British mints was introduced.
