This specimen was lot 75185 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Rupia, 1845. Goa Mint. Maria II. NGC EF-40. Small Head variety. A scarcer Goa type with admirable slate gray toning." This type was struck 1845-49 and is very scarce in nice condition. One rupia was 1200 réis. In 1869, the local mints were closed in favor of machine-struck coinage from the British mints in India, at which time the rupia was made equal to 16 tanga.
