Goa 1848 3 reis
This specimen was lot 75186 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. 3 Reis, 1848. Goa Mint. Maria II. NGC MS-62. A challenging three year type that becomes extremely difficult to obtain in Mint State quality. Deep hazel surfaces still boast a lustrous glossiness, and the devices are free of wear or handling. Given both premium quality and the fact that the type so rarely comes to market, this is a solid example and worthy of strong consideration." This type was struck 1845-48. It also comes undated. One rupia was 1200 réis, making this coin 1/400 of a rupia or 1/100 of a pardao. In 1869, the local mints were closed in favor of machine-struck coinage from the British mints in India, at which time the rupia was made equal to 16 tanga.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
