Goa 1834 150 reis KM-Pn9
This specimen was lot 23293 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Silver 1/2 Pardao (150 Reis) Pattern, 1834. Goa Mint. Maria II. NGC AU-55. Variety with dotted cross above denomination. Deeply toned and only lightly handled, this VERY RARE pattern issue in silver offers great detail throughout and serves as an excellent showcase for the type. Not surprisingly, the only such example of the type seen at NGC." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By the nineteenth century, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This pattern is one of a series that started with a copper three réis. This 150 réis (or quarter rupia) was accompanied by KM Pn10 (with rounded shield on obverse) and Pn11.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
