Goa 1834 3 reis KM-Pn1
This specimen was lot 23299 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Copper 3 Reis Pattern, 1834. Goa Mint. Maria II. NGC MS-62 Brown. A VERY RARE pattern issue in a nearly-Choice state of preservation, the present example yields a wondrous, well-detailed strike along with chocolate brown surfaces and some hints of gloss in the fields." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By the nineteenth century, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This pattern is one of a series that ranged up to a silver 600 réis. This three réis (or 1/200 rupia) was accompanied by KM Pn2 ("3" on the reverse).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
