Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 23291
SB0123-23291r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23291 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Silver Xerafim (300 Reis) Pattern, 1834. Goa Mint. Maria II. NGC MS-61. Variety with dotted circle above denomination. One of just two examples of this VERY RARE type, the present piece offers elegant cabinet toning and a sharp strike, with some enticing hints of brilliance remaining in the protected areas. A great opportunity for the advanced collector of these crude colonial coins." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By the nineteenth century, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This pattern is one of a series that started with a copper three réis. This 300 réis (or half a rupia) was accompanied by KM Pn13 ("300" on reverse).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-Pn12; Gomes-E9.03.
