This specimen was lot 43294 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Damao. 15 Reis, 1843. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield. Bold strike and exceptional for this normally well worn issue. Nice even brown surfaces with quite good eye appeal. Ex: Album 23, September 2015, lot 2025." This type was accompanied by KM 23 (30 réis struck 1840, 1845) and KM 24 (60 réis struck 1840). The Damao mint closed in 1854. In 1871, the Portuguese closed their mints in India and milled coinage from the British mints was introduced.
