Damao 1840 30 reis
This specimen was lot 71209 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Damao. 30 Reis, 1840. Maria II. NGC VF-30. Very well produced and preserved for this somewhat RARE one-year type from the Portuguese colony of Damao in northwestern India. Near complete striking detail is visible, and moderate wear does little to obstruct one's enjoyment of the piece." This type was struck 1840 and 1846. The Damao mint was closed in 1854 and the Goa mint in 1869. After that, coinage for Portuguese India was struck either in Lisbon or at one of the British mints. Thirty réis = half a tanga = 1/10 pardao = 1/20 rupia.
